A Seminar on the Abusive Cartoons at the Union’s Headquarters
The Islamic Union in Norway hosted a seminar organized by the Muslim Youth Organization, where some Muslim spokespeople met with the Editor in Chief of Dagbladet which published an abusive cartoon of the Prophet (PBUH) in one of its reports. The seminar which lasted for 3 hours tackled the objective of these cartoons and the optimum way of handling the situation in order to avoid the negative impact of such actions which provoke Muslims.
Helle Lars the Editor in Chief remained adamant in his position and refused to apologize, believing that what was done came under the concept of freedom of expression, however he did stress that Muslims had the right to demonstrate and express their opinions in any way condoned by the law. His position was in reaction to the request made by some of the attendees that he extends an apology to Muslims. In the same context some of the attendees discussed the best ways that Muslims could express their refusal of such cartoons.
A newly converted Muslim youth Yousef Ber was surprised by the stance of the Islamic Council who asked Muslims not to participate in a demonstration which was attended by around 3000 people. The representative of the Council claimed that this was a cautionary measure to ensure that Muslims would not lose their right and become the accused instead of the victim. This opinion was seconded by Bassem Ghazlan the representative of the Union who encouraged youth to write in newspapers and on the internet and on Face-book, and warned against paying any heed to any malicious responses. All attendees applauded the effort exerted to put together the seminar, hoping that dialogue would always be the basis on which issues are tackled.
